Growing a £250m switching business inside a regulated market
Owning UX across Energy and Insurance meant balancing OFGEM compliance, a 5-day sprint cadence, and a conversion programme that couldn’t afford to slow down.
Energy switching is high-stakes, low-frequency, and tightly regulated by OFGEM — customers compare tariffs they don’t fully understand, under rules that dictate exactly what must be disclosed and when. Meanwhile the business needed the comparison and switching funnel to keep converting through a major technology migration.
- Introduced 5-day design sprints as the default way to resolve business-critical UX questions, replacing slower committee-style sign-off with rapid prototype-and-test cycles.
- Built a working relationship with Legal and Compliance early in each sprint, rather than at review, so regulatory constraints shaped the concept instead of vetoing it late.
- Co-authored the Global Experience Principles (GXP) — a UI/UX language site with live, tested code — so external partners and offshore teams implemented components consistently without re-litigating basic decisions.
- Grew and mentored a multidisciplinary UX team covering Energy, Broadband and MoneySavingExpert’s comparison tools, reporting to the CPO.
The Energy product grew through one of its most successful periods while migrating its underlying platform, with the sprint cadence and GXP pattern library credited internally for keeping delivery speed up without compromising compliance. Shortlisted for group employee of the year in 2016.
